The evolving need of Scaffolding

Scaffolding is basically a make shift structure designed to provide support to workers on a construction site. Whether the job is entirely new or one needing repairs, different kinds of scaffolding is required to assist in the work for both labour and material to be handled, transported from one point to another. Though construction is a major industry where scaffolding is required; it could be construction of a high rise building or a few stories plant spread over a large area, other work sites also require scaffolding to support the smooth and efficient disposal of work. Bridges, ship yards oil rigs are other industries where it may be required at different stages depending on the nature and quantum of the job. Scaffolding is also in demand at other sites like stadiums for seating, temporary seating at public gatherings like live shows or events, exhibitions to name a few.

Ramps, ladders, seats, horizontal or vertical structures and platforms, cylindrical tubes and many other shapes are available in scaffolding to suit specific requirements. In the earlier days scaffolding for a particular site was decided primarily based on the experience and skills of the engineers working. Though this method worked and the jobs were obviously done, there was a lack of precision in deciding the quantity and quality of material used.

Technology has changed all of that for us and scaffolding at any site for any kind of job is strictly decided on the basis of specifications of the structure under construction or repair. A virtual design is created on the computer as per specifications and is tested for strength and durability. All possible variables are foreseen and discussed before deciding the exact shape, size and quantity of scaffolding required down to the last nut and wire.
